  • Irvin had an impressive 8 year career playing for the Newark Eagles in the Negro Leagues hitting for .422 and .396 in 1940-41, winning a triple crown in the Mexican League, and won his second batting title in 1946 while claiming a World Series victory over the Kansas City Monarchs.

    By 1949 and 30 years of age, Irvin became the 10th black player to join Major League baseball. Two years later, Willie Mays joined Irvin in 1951 to claim a National League pennant over the Brooklyn Dodgers and subsequently win the World Series in 1954 over the Cleveland Indians. Irvin also led the league in RBI’s in 1951 and an All-Star in 1952. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973.
