  • From 1955-1960, the Milwaukee Braves finished the season in either first or second place in the National League. The Braves came into the 1959 season after winning the 1958 NL pennant and narrowly losing the World Series in seven games to the Yankees. The Braves were however victorious over the Yankees in the 1957 World Series in another hard fought seven game series. This 1959 Braves team finished the season (86-68) tied with the Dodgers for first place, which resulted in a best of three tie-breaker series. The Dodgers narrowly won both games by a single run to advance to the World Series.

Hank Aaron won the batting title with a career high .355 average and a Golden Glove that same year while Mathews led the league with 46 home runs and was runner-up to Ernie Banks for the NL MVP (Aaron was third). Spahn led the league tied with teammate Lew Burdette with 21 wins.
